Abstract

FilmBaseMatters stresses the chemical industrial complex as a crucial ancillary industry in shaping early mobile and portable cinema in Italy. In particular, by combining the cultural history of cinema, film aesthetics and media archaeology, the project deepens the study of film formats’ material properties and their political and cultural determinations: 1) In the fascist era, with a focus on Agfa-Milan, when raw materials and technology for audiovisual communication concurred to a new expansion of control and government over society and industry; 2) In the 1950s and 60s, with a focus on Ferrania, when a new institutional pressure marked an increasing commodification of small-gauge cinema.
