Abstract
Pest and pathogens cause an estimated loss of about 40% of global agricultural production (FAO, 2020). The use of pesticides is less and less acceptable by consumers but also by the sector operators, therefore international agencies and their policies such as Farm-to-Fork (F2F), a main pillar of the European Commission’s new Green Deal.
The SMARTBERRY consortium will use genome editing techniques or transient knock-down in grapevine and kiwifruit in order to introduce/confer resistance to P. viticola for grapevine and antibacterial polypeptides in kiwifruit. Moreover, the groups involved will develop short peptides and double-stranded (ds)RNA molecules for spraying to contrast these two diseases.
