HYDETECO - High-efficiency Design, Testing, and Control of Synchronous Motors with Reduced Rare-Earths for Automotive
Abstract
The research project intends to develop an integrated methodology of design, electromagnetic characterization, and identification of the optimal control characteristics for synchronous motors for automotive traction applications characterized by a minimum content of "rare earth" type magnets and to set up a demonstrator available for design validation and testing the performance of these machines.
Two types of motors will be considered: low-field magnet-assisted reluctance motor (PMASynRel - target motor) and rare-earth interior permanent magnet motor (IPM - benchmark motor). The two projects will be compared in terms of performance, power density, and efficiency. The design methodology will be validated through the set up of an energy recovery demonstrator of the PMASynRel target motor prototype.
The demonstrator will allow comparison with a further type of machine made available by the proponents, the pure synchronous reluctance (SynRel) motor.
The results of the research project made available to stakeholders and the scientific community through publications and presentations at conferences, will contribute to providing useful information on the current and future developments in the electric automotive traction sector.
