"Understanding multiple interaction among stress factor in the hive ecosystem"

Supervisor: Prof. Francesco Nazzi

Honeybees are the most important pollinators and are essential both for the conservation of plants biodiversity and agricultural production.

In the last decades a worrying decline of honeybee colonies (Apis mellifera L.) often followed by colony losses has been observed in many countries. The loss of bee colonies is due to the interaction among a number of stress factors, including parasites and pathogens (i.e. Varroa destructors, DWV), agrochemicals, the availability and quality of food resources and environmental conditions.

The aim of this PhD project is to understand how different stress agents, both abiotic and biotic, interact with each other and affect bee health, in order to  maintain or restore honey bee health and productivity and provide solutions to this impending pollinators’ crisis.
