An integrated study approach on cow systems to improve animal performance, meat quality and environmental sustainability of dairy farms.

Supervisor: Prof. Edi Piasentier

The culled cows are by-products of milk production and play a key role in meat production in the EU. The commercial value of culled cows, and their meat in particular, is slow, with consumers often expressing little sympathy for this type of meat.

Due to the low daily weight gain and commercial value, farmers sell the cows a few days after culling from the herd diving up the added value that can be obtained by fattening the animals in the barn. Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is a low input high-yield crop and one from its by-products, hemp seed cake, provides proteins of high biological value and has a high content of unsaturated fatty acids beneficial for the human health.

The aim of my PhD project is to increase the value of Italian Simmental (IS) culled cows by improving the performance of the animals, the healthiness of the meat and the environmental sustainability of farms using the hemp seed cake.
