Objectives
The main objective of this course is to provide students with the basic physical knowledge and mathematical tools necessary to study the motion of a fluid and the design of simple fluid systems commonly found in process indiustry.

- Physical interpretation of basic fluid mechanics phenomena.
- Mathematical modelling of basic fluid mechanics phenomena.
Lectures and exercises (Topics and specific content)
Fundamentals: properties of fluids, classification and phenomenology, continuum hypothesis (2 hours).
Statics of fluids: Stevin's law, Archimede's principle, hydrostatics, aerostatics (4 hours).
Experimental Analysis: dimensional analysis and Buckingham's theorem, application to pressure drop calculation in pipe/duct flow, application to particulates motion (particles, aerosols,bubbles (10 hours).
General Conservation Equations: conservation principle, microscopic balances of a flowing fluid, application to one-dimensional flows, vorticity, mathematical definition and physical meaning (10 hours).
Approximate Methods: non-dimensional conservation equations, lubrication approximation, creeping flow, boundary layer approximation (12 hours).
Conservation Equations in One-dimensional Domains: macroscopic balances of a flowing fluid, velocity and flowrate measurements, analysis of one-dimensional flow tubes (8 hours).
Transport of Fluids in Pipelines: design of pipeline networks, basic fluid transport equipments, optimum pipe diameter (8 hours).
Transport of Fluids in Open Channels: balance equations, specific energy, gravity waves and wave velocity, fundamentals of open channels design (6 hours).
Exercises (8 hours).
Labs (2 hours).
