Objectives

Basic concepts of electromagnetic wave propagation. Free space propagation and antennas. Electric and magnetic field, energy and power density of electromagnetic waves. Phase and group velocity, chromatic dispersion. Antenna: basic concepts, parameters. Thin linear antennas. Metallic and dielectric waveguides. Experimental characterization of antenna parameters. Antenna arrays. Radio links. Planning of radio-networks coverage.

- Comprehension of terms and parameters in use for the study of electromagnetic wave propagation.
- Comprehension of terms and parameters in use for the study of propagation of high-frequency signals in transmission lines.
- Comprehension of terms and parameters in use for the study of antennas.
- Comprehension of terms and parameters in use for guided propagation.
- Computation of field radiated by a single or an array of antennas.
- Design, optimization and characterization of thin linear antennas.
- Design of an antenna radio link.
- Design of metallic and dielectric waveguides.

Lectures and exercises (topics and specific content)

Basic concepts: Maxwell's equation in time and harmonic domain; magnetic vector potential; Poynting vector and theorem; uniqueness and reciprocity theorems (6 hours).
Transmission lines: telegraphist’s equations; characteristic impedance of a transmission line; reflection of high-frequency signals from a mismatched load; standing wave ratio, complex power in a transmission line; impedance matching (14 hours).
Free space propagation: plane waves; reflection and refraction of plane waves; Snell's law; Fresnel's formulas; layered media; electromagnetic waves in conducting media; phase and group velocity, chromatic dispersion (14 hours).
Metallic and dielectric waveguides: wave propagation In metallic waveguides; TE and TM modes; cut-off frequency; fundamental mode; monomodality region; wave propagation in dielectric waveguides; hybrid modes; slab waveguide; optical fiber(16 hours).
Antennas: basic concepts; short dipole antenna; loop antenna; thin linear antennas; aperture antennas; antenna parameters; array of antennas (16 hours).
Exercises: exercises on above topics (12 hours).
Labs: experimental characterization of the parameters of a thin linear antenna: input impedance, matching and radiation pattern (12 hours).
