Training Objectives

The aim of the course is to train scholars and professional figures who, in terms of knowledge and methodology, can distinguish themselves in the field of linguistic and literary studies and their applications. The interdisciplinary approach favoured by the different backgrounds of the College's lecturers makes it possible to understand and interpret texts by comparing different languages and cultures, a field in which humanistic studies can reveal their importance in enriching the capacities of thought, argumentation and imagination that are necessary to tackle the problems of present and future society.

Curricula

• The subdivision of the course into three curricula (Foreign Literature; Linguistics, Interpretation and Translation; Italian Studies) and the division of the teaching programme between transversal methodological-theoretical lectures and specific lectures for each curriculum combines opportunities for training and exchange between PhD students working in different disciplines within the area of the humanities and opportunities to acquire and/or refine knowledge pertinent to the curriculum to which they belong. The cultural interaction between the three curricula into which the PhD programme is divided also manifests itself in innovative research lines and projects of an international nature.

• Foreign Literatures: the aim is to privilege in a transdisciplinary and transcultural perspective the interpretation and analysis of literary texts of modern foreign literatures and cultures in the following areas of study: Anglistics and Anglo-Americanistics, French and Francophone Studies, Hispanistics and Hispano-Americanistics, Germanistics, Russian Studies, Serbo-Croatistics. 
  
  
• Linguistics, Translation and Interpretation: offers an interdisciplinary and intercultural approach to the study of foreign languages and linguistics, including applied linguistics, general and historical linguistics, Germanic and Slavic philologies, the history, theories and practice of translation and interpretation, in relation to the language-cultures of reference (French, English, Russian, Serbian and Croatian, Spanish, German).
  
  
• Italianistics: it aims to provide and refine skills and competences in the various research strands in the field of Italianistics, from the history of Italian literature to the theory of literature; from the history of language to Romance philology; from theatre and dramaturgy to comparative studies.

Employment opportunities

• In addition to the outlets in universities and research centres, both Italian and foreign, PhDs may find employment in: international or national organisations with intense relations with foreign countries; institutions operating in specific transcultural and transnational situations, for the protection of cultural, historical and literary heritage, including forms of scientific dissemination; the publishing market (publishing houses, publishing also of the digital type) of the conservation of cultural heritage (libraries, archives, museums).

  Among the highly qualified professional profiles for which the PhD aims to train are:

  • Literary, Cultural and Linguistic Consultants and Operators in the cultural industry and tertiary sector, in publishing (traditional and telematics), in radio-television and web media, in literary and cultural agencies, in the world of art and entertainment;
  • Cross-cultural marketing and/or multilingual services consultant for internationalisation;
  • Multilingual editor;
  • Translators, interpreters and language operators employed in cultural institutions and diplomatic and consular representations;
  • Translators in the literary and humanities fields;
  • Translators and interpreters in the multimedia sector (subtitling, audio description, television interpreting, etc.)
  • Translators and interpreters in highly specialised fields such as the legal-judicial field;
  • Terminologists and lexicographers;
  • Project Managers, Language Engineers
