Industrial and Information Engineering

PHD PROGRAMME WEBSITE

The IIE PhD course aims to contribute to sustainable scientific-technological development, for the improvement of life quality and safety and environmental impact of society, by training young researchers with high qualifications in the fields of Industrial and Information Engineering. The Doctorate intends to offer scientific and technological training to help conceive new systems, devices and production processes in which the mechanical, electrical, electronic, IT and management aspects are addressed with a holistic approach and thus apply those for the development of new technologies in the priority areas of the H2020 program, the national PNR and the regional Smart Specialization Strategy. The topics of Industry 4.0 and Big Data fall into these sectors, denoted by the skills and research activities of numerous members of the PhD committee.

The IIE doctorate offers numerous career opportunities in engineering fields pertinent with the training objectives of the course. In particular, the following opportunities are noted:
 academic career in universities, training centres and national and international laboratories;
 research career in national and international specialised centres;
 career in industrial technological development departments within research centres of private companies operating in the field of information, management and mechanical engineering;
 career in the design sectors of private companies operating in the field of management, mechanical and information engineering;
 career in the field of engineering consultancy.

The educational activity of the doctorate also offers to the doctoral student the opportunity to develop a specific aptitude for the analysis, processing and synthesis of scientific and technological problems, which can also be effectively used in different sectors from those faced during the doctorate program, as evidenced by the IIE PhD alumni’s career.
Moreover, the doctorate offers complementary training activities (research management, public presentation of its activities, collaboration with colleagues abroad, use of advanced equipment / technologies, etc.) that allow the PhD candidate to deal with advanced problems, with competence and flexibility.

The curricula of the PhD program are as follows:
• Curriculum 1 - New management paradigms and fabrication technologies for competitive enterprises with low environmental impact;
• Curriculum 2 - Information and communication technology for the inclusive society;
• Curriculusm 3 - Design of innovative thermo-electro-mechanical systems and development of advanced methods for the assessment of structural damage and reliability for energy saving;
• Curriculum 4 - Mechanical technologies and electronic devices for domotics, medical diagnostic and safety.

Many PhD board members belong to more than one curriculum, but only one is a priority
