Planned Activities
Cycle XL
The PhD course includes a series of educational activities organized and/or suggested by the Academic Board scheduled each year. The frequency of these activities determines the acquisition of 13 credits.
Theoretical courses, seminars, annual reports and Journal clubs will be conducted remotely in connection with the Aviano CRO.
Welcome Day
First-year PhD students introduce themselves and present their research project to the Academic Board and colleagues with a short 5-minute presentation.
Trainings
INTERNAL COURSES
Each year, students will be able to attend specialist theoretical/practical courses in the area and discipline of reference, chosen from those scheduled annually by the PhD course Academic Board. Some courses are repeated every year (e.g. biostatistics course, laboratory safety, introduction to confocal microscopy), others change annually on the basis of topics deemed of common interest by the Academic Board.
TRANSVERSAL COURSES
The University of Udine organizes cross-disciplinary educational activities annually, which allow acquiring skills beyond the specialized knowledge of individual doctoral courses. The cross-disciplinary educational activities are organized within the following thematic areas:
- Cognitive and interpersonal (including activities related to fundamental principles of ethics, gender equality, and integrity);
- Mobility (including language improvement activities);
- Digital (including computer skills enhancement activities);
- Enterprise (including training activities related to valorization and dissemination of results, intellectual property, and open access to research data and products);
- Research (including training activities related to research management, knowledge of European and international research systems, and activities supporting research);
- Career development;
- Communication.
Seminars
"Scientific invited speakers Seminars"
Two groups of invited seminars are scheduled. The first group takes place in the spring period, while the second group occurs in the autumn. The "Invited Seminars" are held by internationally renowned scientists in various fields of study within the course, such as Epigenetics, DNA damage, Transcriptional control, Mitochondrial diseases, Protein structure and function, and the Immune System.
Annual Report
First and second-year doctoral students are required to deliver an annual 30-minute seminar in English on their experimental results in front of the Academic Board and fellow colleagues. After the presentation, there will be a Q&A session for further discussion. Additionally, students are expected to attend and engage with all seminars given by their colleagues.
PhD Thesis defense
The individual research program concludes with the writing of the thesis. The thesis, prepared in English, should contribute to the advancement of knowledge or methodologies in the chosen field of investigation. The Academic Board assesses the training and research activities carried out by each doctoral student annually for the purpose of admission to the following year and the thesis evaluation phase.
