Viticulture and Oenology
Educational objectives
The Course in Viticulture and Oenology will give you a solid university preparation. The study plan is devised on the basis of the guidelines suggested by the Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin (OIV, Paris), and aims to combine solid theoretical knowledge with practical skills to be used in the labor market. The Course relates mainly to the vine-growing and wine-making industry, with particular focus on the cultivation of vines, grape production, transformation of grapes into wine, quality control, and general economic management of the wine-making production chain.
The University has Conventions with the University of Applied Sciences, Hochschule RheinMain in Wiesbaden - Geisenheim (Germany), the E. Mach Foundation of S. Michele all’Adige (Trento), the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, in Mendoza (Argentina). There are numerous Erasmus agreements with European universities that allow students to do internships and attend courses in other wine-making nations.
After completing the Course you can work in the vine-growing and wine-making field, where you can manage the entire productive chain, from the planting and management of the vineyard to the production and transformation of grapes, quality controls, and marketing. You can also work in food industries specialized in fermented products (i.e., the distilling industry, the brewing industry and, in general, juice fermentation industries).
Professional opportunities
Graduates in Viticulture and Oenology can work in the vine-growing and wine-making field, where they can manage the entire productive chain, from the planting and agronomic-phytoiatric management of the vineyard to the production and transformation of grapes, quality controls, and marketing. In compliance with Law 10/04/1991 n. 129, the degree enables graduates to have the title of Oenologist, a professional figure who is competent in grape production and transformation, in quality control and marketing. In particular, oenologists can:
- manage and administrate vine-growing and wine-making industries, and provide consultancy for grape production and transformation, and for the aging, preservation, bottling and marketing of wines and derivatives;
- manage and administrate vine-growing and wine-making industries, and provide consultancy especially on the choice of grape variety and planting systems and on the cultivation and phytosanitary aspects of vines;
- manage and carry out vine-growing and wine-making functions for boards, associations and consortiums;
- carry out microbiological, oenochemical and organoleptic analyses of wines and evaluate the results;
- assist in the planning and choice of technologies to be used in the vine-growing systems and establishments;
- organize the distribution, communication, marketing and advertising of grape and wine products .
