Data Science

Cluster

  • Big Data Analytics and Information Systems

Description

The group deals with several research themes that can be summed up as follows:

  1. The analysis and visualisation of networks. The approach aims to integrate mathematical aspects of a formal type with the experimentation on instances taken from the world of real networks.
  2. The use of data analytics techniques for assessing the effectiveness of information retrieval systems.
  3. The design, development and implementation of compression algorithms and data structures. In particular, the development of online algorithms for analysing and researching in strings and in graphs. Indexing and compression.
  4. The use of machine learning algorithms for classification (categorial data) and the regression (numerical data), with particular interest being paid to mining and sequence analysis.
  5. The use of multi-objective optimisation techniques through genetic algorithms in the domain of data mining.

Research subjects

  • Rating and ranking metrics in the sports context, with possible applications to bibliometric networks.
  • Study and definition of new effectiveness metrics, and formalisation of the properties of existing metrics.
  • Crowdsourcing (outsourcing to non-structured and non-organised masses) for the retrieval of relevance judgements.
  • Design of decision support systems, in the context of contact centres, with advanced functionalities for data mining and data analytics.
