Educational objectives

• The master's degree European Citizenship, Institutions and Policies prepares you to operate in both the public and private sectors, at all levels (local, national, European), in the economic, legal and socio-political settings opened up by European citizenship and by EU policies. The course trains both technical skills and a cultural sensitivity that enables the graduate to decline European citizenship according to the different local and national European identities and to mediate the multicultural contexts generated by globalization.

  European citizenship entails new rights that the European institutions make effective through policies relating to productive and commercial activities, institutional and administrative functions at all levels, and social development in the name of inclusion and equal opportunities. EU policies intersect with very different social situations in Europe, where historical identities strongly characterize the various territories, giving rise to different effects in different places. Internal mobility, then, generates multiculturalism, making the effect of European policies even more kaleidoscopic. In order to exercise the rights of European citizenship, therefore, it is not sufficient to know the European rules and institutions, but it is also necessary to know how to predict and interpret the effects in different regional and national contexts.
  
  The course of study includes classes in law (private and public law in a comparative perspective and European Union law), economics (European economic integration, management of European projects), political and social sciences (political philosophy, political science, sociology), history (history of political thought and economics in Europe) and languages (the working languages of the EU, with an emphasis on communication and cultural mediation).
  
  The Course of Studies is taught in Italian and English: this allows the student to acquire the fundamental terminology of legal and socio-political subjects in both languages. The Course of Studies is delivered in a mixed teaching method: approximately 20% of the teaching activities are online.
  
  The general objective of the course is to train people to understand the complexity of contemporary Europe. Students acquire multidisciplinary knowledge and skills, but also a cultural sensitivity that allows them to perceive social differences not as barriers, but as opportunities for common growth, and that prepares them to find solutions to social problems that all involved parties can agree upon. The general objective is reached through specific objectives:
  - to know the European institutions, EU legislation, EU policy-making procedures
  - to discover the opportunities offered by European citizenship
  - to understand the political, historical and economic dynamics and cultural heritage of Europe
  - to learn the methodologies of social sciences, both empirical and interpretative
  - to learn how to write and manage European projects
  - to develop decision-making skills
  - to develop linguistic and cultural mediation skills

Professional opportunities

Graduates can work in public and private bodies, which operate at all levels, from local to international. They can hold offices that require knowledge of European institutions and regulations and that manage European citizenship with attention to the needs that arise from the specific identities of regional and macro-regional territories. Areas of expertise include the impact of European legislation at local level (national, regional, urban), European funding programmes, worker mobility within the EU and Europe in general, political and economic analysis, policy formation and management. Thus, graduates can hold management roles in transnational legal, economic and social interactions in the European area, both at a corporate and commercial level and at an institutional and political level. Examples of possible functions are:

- European project design
- European funds management
- Application of European regulations in national and regional contexts
- European policies making and management
- Political, institutional, corporate and commercial communication
- Respect of human rights management and control
- Political analysis
- Relationships with foreign workers in the European area

Graduates can also be admitted to doctoral programmes in law, political and social sciences, history, philosophy or economics.

The degree gives access to public competitions for which the Master's Degree LM-90 European Studies is required.
