Didactic goals
The Architectural Design Studio aims at studying the meaning of contemporary dwelling and the relationships thta can be established between public and private space in a housing project sited in an urban context and including a portion of re-use of an existing building, an abandoned army barracks.
The theme of collective dwelling is a fundamental one for architects. More than programs, it deals with the translations of social models into real material space. The designer is called to imagine both the individual environment (the housing unit) and the community formed by more units that shares common spaces and circulation. Housing requires the integration of three design scales:
1- The individual unit with the creation of a dily infrastructure for a restricted group of pepole that shares a dwelling and needs comfort and a spatial subdivision that provides both individual privacy and shared moments.
2- The grouping of more units witht hte definition of shared elements and relational spaces that mediate between the individual and the community
3- The insertion of the housing complex in a larger context with the study of the relationship of an individual buildings with the surrounding urban context in a way to establish a dialogue between the two and a sense of belonging to a larger place.
